The Devotion of Suspect X
I’m hungry for foreign crime these days and was really keen to give The Devotion of Suspect X a try. This book feels so Japanese, the writing is quite sparse and formal. For a book about murder there is little emotional expression, more like repression beneath the character’s attempts to apply logic and rationalisation to an horrific act. That is, until the very last line of the book which expresses utter anguish. A fascinating crime, an unexpected ending, I think this book has the potential to become a cult hit here as well.
