J. W. Diaz was born on January 16, 1949, in Santa Clara, capital of Cuba's Villa Clara province, into a family of mixed Spanish and English origin. After several years on a local newspaper (it shut down for lack of paper), Diaz worked as a stringer in Santiago de Cuba for an international news agency until his imprisonment for 'disobedience' in 1985. Soon after his release, Diaz emigrated to Honduras. He now lives with his Lebanese wife and two children in San Salvador. He continues to travel widely throughout Central and South America.
