Ranjit Bolt was born in 1959 in Manchester. He was educated at the Perse and Balliol, Oxford. After university he became a stockbroker but kept on writing. He translated an unknown verse comedy by Pierre Corneille called "The Liar" which was put on at the Old Vic in 1989. In 1990 he left his job to work on translations full-time. To date he has produced versions of thirty plays. He lives in London.
