Nevermoor, Interest age: from c 8 years, Fiction, Fantasy & magical realism (Children's / Teenage)

A breathtaking, enchanting new series by debut Australian author Jessica Townsend, about a cursed girl who escapes death and finds herself in a magical world - but is then tested beyond her wildest imagination.

Winner of the Dymocks and QBD Children's Book of the Year 2018 and a New York Times bestseller, Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow is the first in an enchanting series for fantasy fans of all ages

Morrigan Crow is cursed. Born on an unlucky day, she is blamed for all local misfortunes, from hailstorms to heart attacks - and, worst of all, the curse means that Morrigan is doomed to die at midnight on Eventide.

But as Morrigan awaits her fate, a strange and remarkable man named Jupiter North appears. Chased by black-smoke hounds and shadowy hunters on horseback, he whisks her away into the safety of a secret, magical city called Nevermoor.

It's there that Morrigan discovers Jupiter has chosen her to contend for a place in the city's most prestigious organisation: the Wundrous Society. In order to join, she must compete in four difficult and dangerous trials against hundreds of other children, each boasting an extraordinary talent that sets them apart. Except for Morrigan, who doesn't seem to have any special talent at all.

To stay in the safety of Nevermoor for good, Morrigan will need to find a way to pass the tests - or she'll have to leave the city to confront her deadly fate.

The story gallops along, and the setting is wonderfully vivid ... A wonderfully assured debut from a young Australian author, Nevermoor sparkles with zest, wit and inventiveness. - Kate Forsyth, author of The Impossible Quest series

  • Wondrous! This book is so much fun. So well written, fun, magical and more than hilarious in many parts. The author kept this 33yo enthralled and smiling throughout. The twists are amazing and I can't wait for the next installment.

  • Step Boldly!   Morrigan Crows story is one of nail biting magical moments, startling creatures, adventures and marvellous mysteries. You hear a number of comparisons between Nevermoor and Harry Potter. However this just only made me even more excited to read it and made me love it even more. Beside the few similarities to Harry's story, Morrigan's stands firmly on its own two separate feet.   Leaving her own world behind Morrigan crosses into Nevermoor a strangely beautiful world, staying with her new mentor in a magical hotel. This Hotel was one of my favourite things in the book. The whole place has a mind of its own, and changes depending on when it feels like it, this just enchanted me. As the book continues every little bit about the hotel was so enriching that I cannot wait for the next few books to find out even more about it.   Another wonderful fact that I love about this book is that it has a giant talking cat! Enough said. Morrigan’s story while still a long way from being finished (8 more books to come.) is heart warming and encourages you to keep cheering for Morrigan to succeed in the face of great struggles. This I believe will be another story that stands the test of time joining the ranks of Harry Potter and Percy Jackson in becoming one of the bestselling children’s series for 8+.   XOXO Rhiannon.

  • I love Jessica Townsend's new book! I am a huge fan of her new book and it obviously isn't surprising because I love Harry Potter as well. But anyone who likes any type of mystery books or adventure books should DEFINITELY read this. I got sucked into this after the very first page! That's what a good book should be!

  • Best book ever! I’m hanging for the next “wundrous” book to come out! I love how the author has made you intrigued from the very start. I think it is even better than Harry Potter! I love all the unexpected plots and twists. I spent all day every day reading it for a whole week!!! Madikatt :)

  • Wunderful, creative, immersive and capturing. Nevermoor creates a universe reminding me of Harry Potter, Alice in Wonderland and even the Hunger Games. This book quite literally had be attached and making noises in reaction to the plot! I had initially bought this for children I look after but it has definitely become a personal favourite. I cannot wait for a second book!

  • This book is by far the best book I have ever read. I loved it, and I gave it to my cousin and she loved it. We have both been hanging out for the next book. Now that it is out, I can't wait to get it. Morrigan has such a cool life in Nevermoor, I wish I was there. Jessica Townsend's books make me feel like I am in the story. I love the feeling I get when I read her books. She makes the reader feel as though they are actually in the story. She makes me feel as though I am Morrigan. I love it.
