Catching Babies is a moving account of an extraordinary career, and reveals the unique experiences that filled Sheena's working days, from first-time mums with unusual birth plans to overwhelmed dads who ended up on the delivery-room floor. At the forefront of evolving practices, she was the first midwife to perform a home water birth in her local area, but also found herself at the centre of a traumatic birth that resulted in a prolonged litigation case and tested her to her limits.
Yet, whatever the working day has brought Sheena's way, ultimately, there are the strong mothers who taught her so much and beautiful babies who have made every single moment as a midwife worthwhile.
Sheena Byrom
Sheena Byrom is a practising midwife of 40 years, having worked in the NHS for most of that time. She was born and brought up in North West England and has lived and worked there all her life. She was one of the UK's first consultant midwives and was awarded an OBE in 2011 for services to the profession. She is married with four children, one of whom has followed her mother's footsteps in becoming a midwife lecturer.
