Simon Beckett is in his mid-thirties and after doing an MA in literature started his own business, which he later sold and went to live in Spain on the proceeds. He's been a drummer in a rock group and is a freelance journalist, working regularly for broadsheet newspapers and colour supplements, especially the Independent on Sunday and The Sunday Times.
