Delirium
Lauren Oliver's groundbreaking and emotionally wrenching storytelling will resonate with readers young and old.
There was a time when love was the most important thing in the world. People would go to the end of the earth to find it. They would tell lies for it. Even kill for it.
Then, at last, they found the cure.
Now, everything is different. Scientists are able to eradicate love, and the government demands that all citizens receive the cure upon turning eighteen. Lena Haloway has always looked forward to the day when she ll be cured. A life without love is a life without pain: safe, measured, predictable, and happy.
But then, with only ninety-five days left until her treatment, Lena does the unthinkable...
Staff Review
Lauren Oliver has once again shown why she is the NBT (next big thing) in YAD fiction. I cannot praise Delirium more highly for its tight plot, incredible emotional pull and effortless writing. My heart went out to our beautiful Lena as she struggled against society’s teaching that love was a disease and considered a failing. Echoing much of our own conservative struggles in society today, it is a true testament to the need to follow your own needs and desires and consider your own happiness rather than try to be ‘one of the crowd’. A wonderful morality tale and, even better, a gripping and fascinating story.

I thoroughly enjoyed this original take on a love story. It was a compelling read that carries you through the high-tension drama surrounding an illicit romance, and the exciting finish has certainly left me keenly waiting for the next title.

Lena grows up in a world where love is a disease, an illness that needs to be cured so one can live a safe, happy, normal life. It is everything she knows and after losing her mother to the illness, she looks forward to receiving the cure (government regulation) when she turns 18 – until she meets Alex, and her world turns upside down.Lauren Oliver is masterful in creating a believable, moving and riveting plot and beautiful, realistic characters that draw you in and allow you to see the world they are living in (and being grateful you don’t). This is not a trite teenage love story. Delirium it is a story of a girl questioning everything she has ever been taught – seeing the truth behind the lies and learning that love (in all its forms) is something to be treasured.
