Rights

Hachette Australia is actively engaged in licensing a broad range of subsidiary and other rights for the books on our fiction, non-fiction and children’s lists. Available rights depend on those we hold for individual books, but regularly include translation, audio, anthology, book club, condensation, stage, film, television, merchandising, large print and animation.

If you are a publisher based outside Australia and New Zealand and interested in finding out more about the books we publish and which rights are available, please email us at licensing@hachette.com.au

If you would like to make an offer to license the translation rights in your language to one of our books please remember to include the following as a minimum when you contact us or our subagent: territory, language, advance, royalties, print run, format, retail price, term, as well as information about your publishing house and the books you publish.

Any queries relating to any other subsidiary and volume rights including serial, condensation, book club, reprint, large-print, audio, electronic, merchandising, animation or film and television rights should be sent directly to us at licensing@hachette.com.au

Permissions

All material published by Hachette Australia Pty Ltd is protected by the Australian Copyright Act (1968). If you wish to reprint or reproduce any material from a Hachette Australia publication, you must obtain written permission from us prior to using the material.

It is important to check the imprint page of the book from which you wish to reproduce material in order to determine the original publisher of the book, as the edition you have may be a licensed edition. In most cases, the original publisher will control the copyright. If the work from which you are requesting permission is an anthology, consult the credit or acknowledgments page and apply to the original source for permission to use the copyright material. This also applies to photographs and illustrations.

It generally takes around six weeks to process a request, which means it is important to allow time in your editorial schedule to clear permissions. A permission fee will normally be charged to compensate the author and/or illustrator for use of their work. The amount of this fee will depend on the content to be reproduced and the intended use.

Permission requests must include the following information:

  • Your address, phone number and email to allow us to respond in the most effective way;
  • The title, author and ISBN of the original publication in which the material which you wish to reproduce was printed;
  • If possible, a photocopy of the imprint page of the Hachette book from which you wish to reproduce the material;
  • Exactly what material you wish to use;
  • Details of how the material is to be used;
  • The format in which the material will be reproduced (i.e. book, ebook, magazine, video, audio, stage show, broadcast, online, CD-ROM, other);
  • Approximate number of words;
  • The territory required (i.e. Australia and New Zealand only, North America only, world);
  • The number of reproductions of the copyright material (i.e. if a book, the initial print run; permission will need to be sought again for additional print runs and new editions);
  • The recommended retail price (RRP) of your finished product;
  • The publication/release date of your finished product;
  • The name of the publisher or company producing the book or other finished product.

Permission requests for use of material first published by Hachette Australia should preferably be emailed to licensing@hachette.com.au
