Applications for Hachette Australia’s annual paid summer internship program are now open.

Launched in 2020, the summer internship program is for anyone interested in a career in publishing. The full-time internship runs for four months, comes with an entry-level remuneration, and is offered each summer. No formal qualifications are necessary.

The Hachette Australia Summer Internship Program provides both a broad understanding of the trade publishing business and a deep dive into how the various departments within a commercial publishing house work together to take books to market – and ultimately into the hands of readers.

Reporting to the CEO and supported by each divisional Director, the successful intern is uniquely placed to garner a 360- degree view of book publishing; right from acquisition through the editorial and production processes, to sales, distribution and finance, and then marketing and publicity. With a focus on engaged learning, this internship will equip the successful applicant with practical skills and empirical knowledge across all facets of trade publishing, enabling them to identify their personal area of interest and empowering them to pursue their ideal future role in publishing.

The 2022-2023 Summer Intern, Uyen Cao, said: ‘I can wholeheartedly say that my experience as part of this internship was more fruitful, fulfilling, and fun than I had hoped (and my hopes were already sky-high). I grew my knowledge of the publishing industry tenfold with the help of supportive Hachette mentors and friends, opportunities to contribute meaningfully to real-world projects in every team including marketing, editorial, and product, and external work experiences such as at Dymocks. Even after I finished up my time at Hachette, I’ve felt very cared for by team members reaching out regularly with advice, opportunities, and check-ins. This paid internship is a true rarity in the industry — and I encourage any young publishing aspirant to apply!’

Interested applicants are invited to submit their CV, together with an expression of interest outlining what they most look forward to in a career in publishing, and, if applicable, details of course accreditation. Applications should be sent to careers@hachette.com.au by close of business on Monday 4 September.

Hachette Australia also hosted a virtual Q&A between Louise Stark, Chief Executive Officer; Cassy Nacard, Senior Product Manager and Momo Chavez, Digital Marketing Executive (2021 Summer Intern), for people interested to learn more about working in publishing. Watch the stream here
