Richard Pape

Born in 1916, Richard Pape was an irrepressible red-haired Yorkshireman, who joined 609 Squadron as an Auxiliary Airman before the war. He later transferred to Bomber Command. During a bombing raid on Berlin, his plane was shot down close to the border between Germany and Holland. Surviving the crash, he began a hunted existence as he made his way back to Britain through Nazi-occupied Europe. After the war, he became a best-selling author and a renowned adventurer, eventually settling in Australia, where he died in 1995.
