Victor Hugo was born in Besanczon, the son of one of Napoleon I's generals. He wrote a tragedy at the age of 14, and throughout the 1820's and 1830's he produced further poetry and drama and established himself at the forefront of the Romantic movement. He was elected to the Constituent Assembly in 1848 and was later sent to exile in Guernsey. His greatest novel, Les Miserables appeared in 1862. He was buried as a national hero in the Pantheon.
