Hachette Australia is proud to be launching our Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), which has been endorsed by Reconciliation Australia. This marks an important step in our Reconciliation journey, recognising First Nations peoples and contributing to a more equitable future for all Australians.
At Hachette Australia, stories are at the heart of everything we do. Through our previous longstanding partnership with black&write! and our current partnerships the Indigenous Literacy Foundation and Magabala Books, we are committed to listening, learning and ensuring First Nations stories are heard, respected and shared widely. Our diversity, equity and inclusion strategy, Changing the Story, places these partnerships and commitments at the centre of our work, and our RAP provides an important framework for continuing that journey.
We are thrilled to be launching our RAP during NAIDOC Week 2026 and look forward to progressing future RAPs and reconciliation initiatives that contribute meaningfully to Australia’s Reconciliation journey.
Louise Stark, CEO says, ‘Hachette’s RAP Committee has relished working together to publish our first ever RAP. Through this process, we’ve learnt a lot about how to be better publishers for First Nations creators, better partners for the First Nations organisations we are working with now, and those we hope to work with in the future. It’s been an invaluable journey so far; one we are excited about continuing.’
As part of our commitment to Reconciliation, Hachette has already introduced initiatives including:
Learning and Development: Annual DEI training is compulsory for all. In 2025, this included anti-racism training.
Best-Practice Documentation: Our Editorial team’s engagement in regular training in cultural safety and sensitivity, and Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property, has led to the creation of best-practice documentation to better support First Nations creators throughout the publishing process.
Inclusive Language: Our Marketing team has created an Inclusive Language Guide, while our Editorial team is revising the House Style Guide to ensure our communications and books use sensitive, inclusive language.
Promotion of First Nations Books: We actively promote books by First Nations creators throughout the year, including during significant periods like NAIDOC Week.
Supplier Engagement: We are committed to increasing opportunities to work with First-Nations owned businesses and actively seek out First Nations suppliers, including printers, designers and office service providers. Our distribution centre also sources goods and services from First Nations-owned businesses.
Acknowledgment of Country: We include an Acknowledgement of Country in meetings, communications and publications where appropriate, and open our annual conference with a Welcome to Country.
First Nations Freelancers: To support First Nations publishing, we require cultural sensitivity reads by First Nations experts where appropriate, and regularly engage First Nations freelancers across editorial and educational resources.

Since 2006, Reconciliation Action Plans (RAPs) have enabled organisations to sustainably and strategically take meaningful action to advance reconciliation.
Based around the core pillars of relationships, respect and opportunities, RAPs provide tangible and substantive benefits for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, increasing economic equity and supporting First Nations self-determination. To learn more, visit www.reconciliation.org.au.
