Fiction, Modern & contemporary fiction (post c 1945)

A moving novel which engages the reader in an emotional roller-coaster from beginning to end.

Twenty-seven- year old Renata Ochiltree falls down a mountain and is injured in body and soul. It seems the fall does not stop at the base of the mountain; she keeps on plummeting, even after the event. In the midst of family failure, she grapples with old love that she can t relinquish, and the further she falls, the greater its hold on her.

She is fiercely angry with herself and the world, but as her emotional tumble continues she becomes increasingly inured against herself, until she knows she is angry on the one hand, but cannot feel her emotions on the other.

In her depressed state she struggles to find a reason for living. Eventually she faces her demons and fights them with a desperation that will lead her either to death or to true, courageous survival.
