Hachette Australia is so happy to congratulate our local & international authors on their ABIA Awards 2017 longlistings.

The ABIAs have been celebrating Australian stories and the astounding talent in the Australian publishing industry for 17 years. The ABIA Voting Academy is made up of over 100 representatives from across the bookselling and publishing industry.

The shortlist will be announced on April 9 and the winners will be announced at the gala event on May 25.

We are pleased to reveal that Hachette Australia have several authors longlisted in the following categories:

We also offer our congratulations to the amazing eight authors longlisted for the Matt Richell Award for New Writer of the Year.

For more information visit the ABIA website.

  • The Hate Race - Maxine Beneba Clarke

From one of Australia's most exciting writers, and the author of the multi-award-winning FOREIGN SOIL, comes THE HATE RACE: a powerful, funny, and at times devastating memoir about growing up black in white middle-class Australia.

  • Songs of a War Boy - Deng Thiak Adut, Ben Mckelvey

The true story of Deng Adut - Sudanese child soldier, refugee, man of hope.

  • The Easy Way Out - Steven Amsterdam

A brand new novel everyone will be talking about from the award-winning author of THINGS WE DIDN'T SEE COMING and WHAT THE FAMILY NEEDED.

  • Where the Trees Were - Inga Simpson

A beautiful novel about the innocence of childhood and the scars that stay with you for life, from the award-winning author of MR WIGG and NEST.

  • The Bone Sparrow - Zana Fraillon

Subhi's imagination is as big as the ocean and wide as the sky, but his world is much smaller: he's spent his whole life in an immigration detention centre. THE BONE SPARROW is a powerful, heartbreaking, sometimes funny and ultimately uplifting hymn to freedom and love.

  • Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Parts One & Two - J.K. Rowling, John Tiffany, Jack Thorne

It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn't much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband, and father of three school-age children.

  • The Underground Railroad - Colson Whitehead

THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD is at once the story of one woman's ferocious will to escape the horrors of bondage and a shatteringly powerful meditation on history.
