Hi Lucy! Thanks for answering some questions for us. How does it feel to have Things We Hide from The Light almost out into the world?
I’m so excited! And relieved! Every time I start a new book I worry that I’ve forgotten how to write. It’s all part of my process.
What initially inspired you to write this series?
The idea started percolating with the Jake Owens song 'Down to the Honky Tonk'. I was also kicking around the idea of a heroine suddenly becoming a guardian and eventually my brain pushed the two ideas together. I love stories about found family…and dogs!
Things We Never Got Over found a new readership on TikTok; how did it feel to see so many new fans around the world?
TikTok falling in love with Knox and Naomi was a huge surprise. It’s been incredible to have readers from all over the world discover this book. It gives me goosebumps!
TWNGO was originally an independently published book; did you ever think the series would be traditionally published one day, and how do you feel now that it has?
At the beginning of every year I write down my Big, Scary Goals. I’ve had “paperback deal” written down for two years. When Mr. Lucy and I had our first call with Bloom Books and they said the words “paperback deal” I was squealing internally! Now thanks to Bloom Books and Hodder Books, readers all over the world are finding TWNGO on shelves in bookstores. I’m still internally squealing!
What inspired you to focus on Nash and Lina for the sequel, and what was your favourite part of writing their story?
Originally TWNGO was just going to be a standalone, but when Nash and Knox got into a fist fight in the middle of the road I knew I needed to write Nash’s story too. I wanted to explore how two brothers could go through the same thing yet come out completely different. I loved finding a way to balance Nash’s newfound anxieties with his steadfast loyalty to his job and the town. And adding Lina into the mix with her secrets was the perfect way to shake things up for him!
TWNGO was the embodiment of the grumpy X sunshine trope; is there a romance trope we should look forward to in TWHFTL?
I’d say wounded, broody hero is at the top of the list with a large helping of opposites attract and forced proximity.
Can fans expect to see more of Naomi and Knox in this sequel?
Absolutely! Knox and Naomi’s wedding occurs in Things We Hide From the Light and I cried my face off while writing that scene!
What’s up next for you?
I’m currently working on Lucian’s book, the third story in the Knockemout series. Once that’s done, I’ll be starting the fourth book in my Riley Thorn romcom mystery series.
You have lots of Australian fans who love TWNGO and can’t wait for the sequel. Do you have a few words you’d like to say to them?
I’ve had many Australian readers with me since the very beginning of my writing career. You’ve been some of my loudest cheerleaders and biggest supporters. I’m so grateful for you! Ta!
